Conservatives rejected UKIP offer on Lisbon referendum, claims Pearson

  • 07:35
  • Lord Pearson
    • 28/11/09
    • Lord Pearson, UKIP leader
    • Today, Radio 4

Lord Pearson reaffirmed his claims made in The Times this morning that UKIP had offered not to stand at the next election if David Cameron agreed to hold a referendum on the ratified Lisbon treaty.

He said the report was “slightly paraphrased and condensed”, but again claimed that he believed the offer had been put to the Tory leader.

“We offered that if we got a clear written promise with an agreed wording for a referendum... then we would stand down for the general election,” he said.

“We made this offer to Tom Strathclyde, who was going to see David Cameron later.”

“He said I’ll talk to David, sure.”

He went on to defend the secrecy of the attempted deal, saying that it wouldn’t have been achieved by consulting the membership.

He also defended the strategy of targeting Conservative seats with the aim of achieving a hung parliament, adding: "They’ve left us no option now, they’ve taken the referendum off the agenda."

Anna

You cannot have a referendum on a ratified treaty!

Max Tasker

Sounds like the Tories! Their Idea of being Patriotic means to the Party NOT the Country!

Andy

Lord help us he really is an idiot. By targeting Tory seats all he is doing is helping Labour or the LibDems. Does the fool not realize they are Eurofanatics ? The next intake of Tory MPs will be profoundly Eurosceptic. By backing the Tories he has more chance of achieving his objectives. Wish some one would damn well tell him.

Barrie

Andy is correct. Every wasted, or protest vote, will help steer labour closer to getting back in power. It's going to be be much better to stick with the tories and protest from within to get our views across.

uknoteussr

You toryCon's have not won yet so dont go counting on a win yet...I for one WILL be vote ukip party come the GE and i dont no anyone (and i no a lot of people)that will not be voteing for ukip ... If the people vote the same way as in the eussr vote we just had then you will not win anything

Lets face it you troycon.s are as bad as liebour if not far far far worse

phill

lol.

Tristan Downing

What would be the point? Lisbon has passed, it is now law. It cannot be undone, Lisbon and the EU are now one and the same thing. What you mean when you say you want a referendum is a vote on whether or not to leave the EU. So stop lying about wanting to vote on Lisbon and just be honest about the IN/OUT vote you really want! I'm all for leaving the EU, but I'm more in favour telling the truth and telling lies (like those still calling for a Lisbon vote) is just pathetic. It was Labour that didn't give us a vote on the treaty, not the Tories. Now Labour have forced the treaty on us, they Tories cannot undo it without leaving Europe. But the Tories have never promised a referendum on leaving the EU, it is not a part of their agenda and they are upfront about that. By supporting UKIP, you might think you're being clever but you're not, the only possible result of supporting UKIP would be an increase in union with the EU and greater loss of sovereignty. Supporting UKIP and splitting the Tory vote means destroying the UKIP agenda of distance from the EU; don't do it. If you want the UK to be independent, don't vote for UKIP, you logically and realistically have no other choice.

phill

What would be the point?

The point would be to LET the uk have its say on the EUSSR and if that mean's Mr Shameron lose's the next GE     SO BE IT    That's what you get for puting party before county

Andy

I'm all for leaving the EU. I think it is turning into a fascist state. But by voting for UKIP you allow Labour and the LibDems to keep more seats than they deserve. If UKIP were serious about their objectives they would work for a Tory victory and the destruction of the Labour Party.

phill
