Migrant housing complaints "largely a problem of perception", says Minister

Mr Healey said that he agreed with the findings of today’s Equality and Human Rights Commission report, which concluded that migrants do not have preferential access to social housing, adding that it was a “largely a problem of perception”.

He said: “It is largely a problem of perception. Foreign migrants don’t have a right to council housing, and most migrants from the European Union don’t either".

He went on to say that he was not going to change the rules and was not going to stop allowing migrants to signing on for council housing.

He added that he aimed “to get a simpler, better publicised, better understood system”, and one that allowed local authorities leeway to “give preference to the kind of people they’re most concerned about”.

“There is more we can do and more leeway we can give to local authorities to respond to the particular pressures they face in their area.”

Mr Healey later said the EHRC report “gives lie to the myth that somehow the system is biased to people in this country and gives favour to new migrants”.

He added that the report showed: “We need to build more homes in particular that people can afford to rent”.

He said that by the end of the month he’d be publishing new statutory guidance on the social housing.
