Public support "crucially important" to Afghan mission, says General

General Dutton said that that public support was "crucially important" to troops serving in Afghanistan, as polls show declining public backing for the war.

"Support back home is crucially important but I don't sense any lack of support for soldiers back home," he said.

"In general terms I sense public support for what soldiers are doing".

However he said there had been a collective failure to articulate the reasons for continuing the mission in Afghanistan.

"Collectively we have not explained it as well as we should," he said.

The public, he added, "have to believe that we can win and if we can show momentum along that path, I think we then have longer to sort it out".

He accepted that public support for the war was damaged by the fraud in the Afghan elections, but said fraud was "widely expected", and this was not the main goal of the mission.

"British soldiers are not dying simply to provide an electoral opportunity for Afghans".

Instead, he said the operation was about preventing the country becoming a threat to Britain. "The consequences of it going wrong are far greater," he said.

He added: "The plan we are working to at the moment is that in a period of three to four years we have been able to build suppress the insurgency and at the same time build up the Afghan security force to a sufficient strength to take on that insurgency themselves," he said.
