Three new NHS policies part of move away from targets, says Brown

The Prime Minister and the Health Secretary announced three new policies for the NHS at the Prime Minister's monthly press conference.

Gordon Brown and Andy Burnham announced a free health check to all those over 45, the right to see a cancer specialist within two weeks of diagnosis, and the right to treatment of cancer within eighteen weeks.

"It is part of a move away from a target-led approach", said Mr Brown.

Mr Burnham pledged that that "patients will receive a standard of care, regardless of who they are and where they live".

He added: "We're seeking views for a legal right for people to choose to die at home".

It remains to be seen just what "standard of care" patients will recieve. It could be a poor standard for all we know, shame Mr Burnham declined to clarify this point!

More vote seeking anouncements without any idea as to  how they will be funded -  roll on the election.

you need to go back to 1944, and 1946 look very carefully at the way the nhs was looked at both for the patient and there expectations and the medical staff for there way of thinking. If you took just a fraction of the way it was thought out you would achieve milestones. Back to basics on expectations. I think you need to make the public aware of the amount of money it costs to give excellent treatment. Do you remember the advert where an accident takes place and lists the multidisiplinary team like nurses doctors radiographers etc etc make people aware that nhs is free.
