Mr Lloyd rejected suggestions support for Gordon Brown at last night's Parliamentary Labour Party meeting was a result of bullying from Number 10.

"MPs don't vote for their own collective suicide, if MPs had to thought Gordon was the right person they would have told him so," he said.

"This isn't about bullying, it's about what people believe, and people do believe, confirmed very strongly last night, that Gordon is the right person. How do you bully people of the kind that you've talked to over the years in the Parliamentary Labour Party?"

He added: "There were some strong voices raised in criticism also last night in the meeting. Those views were aired but what was overwhelmingly the mood in the meeting is that Gordon Brown is the right man to lead the country."

Mr Lloyd said Labour leadership speculation had been "resolved" and urged Gordon Brown to open up a dialogue with the public.

"There's no leadership challenge... You're not going to get the bad news story about this," he told a BBC reporter.

Urging Gordon Brown to speak "passionately" about what he believes in more often, he said: "I want Gordon Brown to open up dialogue with the British people."

"Gordon himself needs to open up in way that not only his colleagues in parliament but members of the public can see what we're doing," he added.

Mr Lloyd also warned against slamming the Prime Minister for possible policy changes resulting from this dialogue: "I don't think we can say 'this is terrible' to change policy," he said.
