Tories could overturn decision on sports broadcasting, says Hunt

  • 11:07
  • Jeremy Hunt MP
    • 15/11/09
    • Jeremy Hunt MP, Shadow Culture Secretary
    • Sunday Live, Sky News

Mr Hunt said a future Conservative government would be prepared to overturn the Government decision on free-to-air sports events if it did not agree with it.

"We're going to do what the Government's doing which is look at the consultation that's happening and see what the evidence is that people bring forward," he said.

Asked if a future Conservative government would be prepared to overturn the decision made by the Government resulting from the consultation, Mr Hunt said: "absolutely".

He added: "It's finely balanced, I think what most people want is a solution that doesn't mean that our iconic national events... should be available for everyone to see but not at a cost that is too high."

Licence fee cut

Mr Hunt also confirmed that he had not ruled out a cut in the BBC licence fee, claiming that the BBC could make savings by not catering to "every single niche".

"Times are very tough and we think it would be pretty hard to make the case for an increase in the licence fee right now and we're not ruling out freezing the licence fee or cutting it," he said.

He added: "It can't be involved in every single niche of the market and with multi-channel TV there are now lots of other ways of satisfying those demands".

Murdoch

Mr Hunt also denied that the Conservatives' media policies had been influenced by a deal struck between the party and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, as alleged by Lord Mandelson.

""If there was some deal between the Conservatives and News Corp, then what about Labour's deal in 1997, 2001 and 2005? It's absolute nonsense," he said.
