We must shoulder some blame for rise in BNP support, says Hain
Peter Hain, speaking on the latest edition of the BBC's Straight Talk, concedes that the government must take some responsibility for the growth in support for the BNP.
Put to him that the fact a million people voted BNP at the European election was a far bigger issue than Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time he says that the government must "take responsibility and shoulder some of the blame".
"That is the big issue for us as a Labour Government, not just to confront because we’ve tried to do that, but to deal with, because a lot of them are Labour supporters, a lot of them are people who don’t vote normally, some are Conservative supporters; there is a now a bigger disenchantment with politics, it’s not just because of the MPs’ expenses fiasco and scandal," he will say.
"And when you’ve the recession, when you’ve got a shortage of housing, then you’ve got migration and all of these things come together in a toxic mix, it’s very, very fertile territory for racists and fascists to exploit, as it always has been in history, and we have to take responsibility and shoulder some of the blame for that."
He also admits that the government "haven’t had a good housing record".
"We should have prioritised housing much more than we did. You can’t prioritise everything, we prioritised health and education and we were right to do so, but I think we could have done more on housing, especially county councils, and councils doing more on housing as we are now belatedly allowing them to do," he will say.
